The Project: What is ‘Kure’?
‘Kure’ is a 3-minute, 3D animated short film. With a tight scope of 51 shots, our primary goal is to create a high-quality, emotionally resonant piece that serves as a powerful portfolio showcase and a testbed for our production pipeline.
Our core technical and artistic challenge is the fusion of two distinct mediums:
- 3D Character Animation: We are aiming for realistic, nuanced character performances that carry the story’s emotional weight.
- 2D Painted Backgrounds: The world itself will be rendered through painterly backgrounds, projected onto 3D geometry to create a sense of depth and a living, illustrative atmosphere.
Successfully blending these two elements is the central pillar of this project.
Our Vision
We aim to explore the contrast between a beautiful, yet raw art style and a grounded human story. The world of Kure, despite the endless rain, has a somber beauty. We want the viewer to feel the weight of the characters’ struggle, not just through their actions, but through the environment that surrounds them. The story is a compact, character-driven drama, so every creative choice should serve to heighten the emotion of the final, pivotal scene.
The Story
This is the narrative we are bringing to life:
In a world ravaged by a century of relentless rain, Ulla and Anton flee towards Kure, one of the last standing cities. A desperate chase through the city’s drainage system ends in disaster as they become trapped in a narrow tunnel with only one small escape route.
In a heart-wrenching moment of clarity, Ulla realizes only Anton can fit. She sacrifices her own chance to escape, urging him to take his younger sister, Asta, and go on. Anton emerges alone into the gray light of Kure, carrying not just his sister, but the immense weight of Ulla’s sacrifice.
